A woman who was single would attract disapproval and pity. She couldn't have children or even live together with a man with a sexual relationship or have a profession. Girls during this time could only have low paying jobs and had less education than boys. Pretty much the woman's purpose during the Victorian Era were to reproduce and marry. When the woman got married all of her stuff automatically was owned by the man. Most women between the ages of 15 to 22 would have to result to prostitution in order to earn some money during this time. Over 9000 prostitutes were known by cops.
Also when the woman was married she agreed to obey her husband which was written in the marriage ceremony. It wasn't until the late 20th century that it could be omitted from their wedding vows. The woman's husband pretty much controlled everything. he could take her kids and send them to live somewhere else or spend their wife's inheritance on prostitutes or whichever.
Nice insights, Ashton.
